Stefanie Christina Huber elected new president of the Austrian Savings Banks Association

The Austrian Savings Banks Association (Österreichischer Sparkassenverband) represents the interests of the Austrian savings banks at national and international level. At the same time, it acts as a contact point for authorities as well as Austrian and European special interest groups. The newly elected president, Stefanie Christina Huber, will carry out her presidency on an honorary basis alongside her position as Chair of the Management Board of Sparkasse Oberösterreich (Sparkasse OÖ). “It is a major task and I intend to approach this honorary position with respect and commitment,” she said in her inaugural speech.
As at the Sparkasse OÖ, the topics of digitalisation, financial education, equal opportunities and sustainability are particularly important to her. However, she also aims to expand the close contact with Brussels and the EU and to intensify talks with the central bank, the banking supervisory authority and politicians at the same time. Within the Austrian Savings Banks Group, Ms Huber is very keen to promote cooperation among the individual savings banks.

Open and lively exchange and the bringing together of different perspectives should result in a joint approach: “As a savings bank group, we are not just a financial services provider, not just a banking group – we are committed to the common good and stand for regionality, responsibility, stability and, above all, for believing in yourself. People are at the heart of everything we do and, especially in times of growing uncertainty, we must be a visible anchor of trust and confidence,” said Ms Huber.

The president is supported by a team of around 30 people from the Austrian Savings Banks Association, headed by General Secretary Franz Portisch: “I am delighted that Stefanie Christina Huber has been unanimously elected the new president of the Austrian Savings Banks Association. We are very pleased to have acquired Stefanie, a staunch advocate of the savings banks concept, as the head of our special interest group. She not only brings with her a wealth of experience but is also characterised by her creative drive and proactive approach, which will allow her to provide new impulses from which both the Austrian Savings Banks Association and the Austrian Savings Banks Group will benefit in the future.”

The Chair of the Supervisory Board of Sparkasse OÖ, Rudolf Kraus, also congratulated Ms Huber on her new role: “I am very happy that Stefanie Christina Huber will be holding this important and highly respected position of president of the Austrian Savings Banks Association in the future. As Chair of the Supervisory Board, I will be supporting her together with the Management Board team and wish her every success.”

The election of the new president follows the departure of the previous president, Gabriele Semmelrock-Werzer. “I would like to thank Gabi sincerely for the excellent and successful cooperation during her presidency. Thanks to her many years of experience, she has represented the interests of the Savings Banks Group both in Austria and particularly at EU level with aplomb and firm conviction, despite the numerous, external crises that have characterised recent years. Communicating the importance, the value and the special requirements of regionally anchored and sustainable savings banks committed to the common good was truly a matter very close to her heart,” concluded Franz Portisch.
