New Kärntner Sparkasse Headquarter

At the heart of modern banking

From history to the future: After a two-year renovation, Kärntner Sparkasse reopened its headquarters in the heart of Klagenfurt. It’s not just an architectural gem, it’s a meeting place, shaping the way customers and financial experts interact in a state-of-the-art way.

In just two years, Kärntner Sparkasse’s main building in Klagenfurt was transformed into Carinthia’s most modern bank. The historic, over 500-year-old building required a complete renovation that left no stone unturned. Only the listed exterior facade remained intact and was held in place by an elaborate support structure. Inside, the building was completely gutted and rebuilt. The renovation was a spectacular feat of strength and an impressive achievement by the many companies involved, most of which are from Carinthia. The result: an architectural highlight that preserves history while setting new standards.

Initial considerations to rebuild the Sparkasse headquarters on the outskirts of the city were quickly discarded. The goal was to prevent further economic weakening of the city center, and to make the Sparkasse building a meeting place and continue to be a footfall generator and financial magnet in the heart of Klagenfurt. Sustainable construction also means revitalizing existing structures and preventing further soil sealing, thus acting in the interests of biodiversity and nature conservation. The positive development of the city center is significantly promoted, so the Lindwurm and Sparefroh remain best friends.

It’s a place that’s classic, timeless, yet special – thanks to the friendliness and openness with which people are welcomed.
